PhD. Gabriela Olmedo Álvarez, scientific adviser

She has a degree in Biology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Completed postgraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. Is a senior researcher at the Department of Genetic Engineering at Cinvestav Unidad Irapuato, a department she headed from 2007 to 2013. Was director of CINVESTAV Unidad Irapuato from 2013 to 2021.

Currently directs the Molecular Biology and Microbial Ecology laboratory. Her lines of research seek to understand the evolution of bacteria and their adaptation to different environmental conditions, as well as to understand the dynamics and molecular mechanisms involved in the assembly of microbial communities. Her research aims to bridge disciplines and scales, with approaches to biogeography, synthetic ecology, genes, molecules, and theoretical modeling, which she does through interaction with various collaborators. Her model is the microbial communities of Cuatro Ciénegas, Coahuila.

Her research work has been reflected in more than 50 publications in international journals and in 14 book chapters from publishers. The impact of her scientific work has been reflected in more than 1,700 citations to her publications.

One of her greatests interests is education and outreach, which is why during the summer and since 2003, she has organized the "Live Science Workshops" that are mainly aimed at young scientists, in addition, she collaborates in the "Science for Youth” organized by Dr. Bor from the Mathematics Research Center (CIMAT). Together with Dr. Souza from UNAM, promoted the creation of a molecular biology laboratory at the Centro de Bachillerato Tecnológico Agropecuario No. 22 (CBTA22), the only high school in Mexico that has this type of laboratory. She is a founding member of the Citizen Innovation Council and the Innovation Cluster. She is an ambassador in Mexico for the ASM (American Society for Microbiology) for education in microbiology.

Has received distinctions such as the Recognition for Research and work for the dissemination of Science, granted by the Board of Directors of the Institute of Irapuatense Women (INMIRA) within the framework of the Commemoration of International Women's Day, as well as the " Medal of Merit in Science 2010”, awarded by the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District. She was a Fullbright-García Robles Fellow and Visiting Researcher at the Salk Institute in San Diego, California. She was recently named ambassador of the International Institute for Agriculture, with the distinction IICA Chair.8
